Instagram vs Reality: Reflection 3

What is the difference between self and self-presentation? This is the question posed by cultural analyst Sherry Turkle, who believes that computers are causing us to re-evaluate our

identities, specifically in relation to our online personas. I think to break it down to the simplest terms, “self” is how you feel inside, and “self-presentation” is how you display to the world. In astrology these two terms can be represented by your Moon and Rising signs. Your Moon sign is your inner self. How you act when nobody is around. How you think inside your mind. Your Moon sign is the most accurate representation of your “self”. Your Rising sign is the self you present to the world. Astrologists say this fade with time as you start to get older, however your Rising sign is often how you want people to see you.

I think this analogy is great in relations to social media presence as well. You often have you “Moon self”, that is the most authentic representation of you, and you have your “Rising self” that is the version of you want people to perceive you as. This social media persona is often embellished and idealistic. People tend to hide their flaws and put emphasis on their successes.
